: : MRS. DAPHNE ATERE ROBERTS – (PRESIDENT)

Daphne Atere-Roberts is not new to the business of voice work. She stumbled into it accidentally at the tender age of 16 when she was approached by a roving reporter of a current affairs programme on the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service to take part in a vox pop.

Her manner and diction was enough to elicit enquiry from the then Director general of the Broadcasting corporation and in a short while the young school leaver was undergoing in-service courses organised by the BBC for continuity announcer in the station. Thus her career began.

But Daphne later went on the Milton Meargen Teachers college MMTC for a 3 year course in which she majored in Art and Crafts and English qualifying with a Higher Teachers certificate in 1976.

Her holidays were spent in Broadcasting House where she experienced the garmot of training from reporting, programme presentation, music presentation, production etc. She was also exposed to television when she became presenter of a current affairs programme for Youths on SLBSTV on qualification from MMTC.

Mrs. Atere Roberts also took on external courses in speech and Drama from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. These were to further polish skills in public speaking, dramatic monologue and speech.

In another twist of fate, Daphne was invited to do freelance work with the BBC external service (Africa service) she presented Network Africa, Medical programme and was a keen participant in many of the BBC African theatre performances that took place.

Sensing that her future lay in media, Daphne began a ND course at the College of Journalism at London’s most famous address fleet street where she read Journalism and Mass Communications.

On her return to Africa, she began work as News Editor at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria FRCN. She also presented programmes on Voice of Nigeria the external service of the station.

Mrs Atere Roberts has also worked as PA to Chief Opral Benson, Guardian Newspapers as Senior Correspondent and Columnist for Lagos Life.

She is married with a child.
